White Cube

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Daily noon-2am
38 Mao Er Hutong, Dongcheng
6401 1675

Exactly what its name suggests: a white cube that makes a notable contrast to its surrounding neighbourhood and the public exercise facilities out front. Large square divans surround low-set tables in the front section, while a small private room lies off to the side and an elevated loft is tucked in the back. Manager Li Zhenhua (of Mustard Seed Garden fame) intends to use the venue for various exhibitions and events. Aside from its selection of decently priced drinks, authentic Yunnan food is offered, though it’s a bit of a challenge to dine on the tables. Reserve ahead for lunch.

Wave Café

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Daily noon-2am
18 Houhai Nanyan, Xicheng

This living-room/sunroom venue takes its design cues from 80s issues of Better Homes and Gardens, complete with gardening tools hanging from the walls. Soft jazz and latin waft through the space and plush couches and chairs make for a cozy way to sip coffee (RMB 88 for a DIY version, RMB 15-30 for the usual types).

V

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Daily 2pm-2am
3/F Nalisha Building, Guangshun Nandajie, Wangjing
13520111105

This bar, the latest venture from Bai Feng (owner of Rainbow’s Time and the now demolished Artefacts), is decked out with a tasteful mixture of modern and antique furniture, fantastic plant life and a healthy selection of alcohol (cocktails RMB 20-30). Kebabs (RMB 5) and bread-based tapas (RMB 5) fend off the munchies in style.

Unforgettable Tonight

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Daily 2pm-3am
7A/11A Xiushui Nanjie, Chaoyang
6503 1997

A quiet place to chat and relax, the soundtrack is primarily composed of ballads, live and canned. A sleek bar, underlit with red neon, contrasts with the innermost room with Native American sculptures and cartoon cutouts.

Treelounge

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Daily 6pm-3am
East Third Ring Road, Chaoyang

One of Beijing’s true lounges features soft colours, couches with a modern twist on 1950s American diner booths, a fireplace for the cold weather and a patio for the warm weather. Music perfect to hang by includes dub, reggae, electronic, occasional performances by groove collective XXX, and more and psychedelic projections provide a bit of extra eye candy. Veggie food, BBQ and reasonably priced alcohol are available.

The Club

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Daily 8pm-4am
Bldg 43, Beisanlitun Nanli, Chaoyang
6417 7791

This two-floored space features a dance floor surrounded by couches where house and techno music flow. Upstairs, a 400-square-metre Vietnamese restaurant, transforms into a lounge after dinner with low-key music setting the scene.

The Bank Cafe and Bar

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

7pm-midnight
22 Houhai Xiyan, Deshengmen, Xicheng
8403 6256 ext 20

Opened by design firm Blue Elephant, this bright, Fellini-esque space is full of plant life, slick modern couches and the occasional antique. A second floor balcony is a little too intimate, but the rooftop patio offers one of the lake’s best views. Mid range prices for cocktails and coffee.

Tanewha

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Daily 6pm-2am
Sanlitun Nanjie, Chaoyang
6594 4868

The Kiwi-themed Tanewha has a loyal following. Wooden floors and candlelight lends the place an air of sophistication. The popular pool table draws a lot of business. The music is a mix of rock, jazz, R&B and soul. Tanewha sports a large selection of lagers and mixed-drinks as well as good bar food.

Success

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Daily 7pm-3am
4 Gongti Dong Lu, Chaoyang
6595 9494 ext 80

The name says it all. A live band pumps out Mandopop classics framed by a stage of outrageously garbed showgirls (dancing nuns on one occasion). Uniformed hostesses in slinky evening wear serve you drinks, light your cigarettes : all part of the in-house service. Part cabaret, lounge, dance club and KTV, an evening spent in Success is the be-all, end-all of Beijing kitsch. Best of all, there’s no cover charge!
