Imported from its original location in Tianjin, Sgt. Peppers is the quintessential expat-friendly bar. The multi-storied building has classy wooden floors and pub-like décor with a heavy focus on Beatles memorabilia (among other classic rock icons). There are also pool tables and a pleasant rooftop beer-garden. Cover band Red Zebra performs Friday and Saturday nights.

As luxurious as the most exclusive private clubs in London, New York or Tokyo, Merchant Prince, close to Chaoyang Park West Gate, is an oasis for the Beijing elite. The building is run down, but once you step in the freight elevator whisking you to the third floor, you’ll forget the club’s no longer at Chaoyang Park and the old geodesic dome is gone. In-house go-go girls put on regular performances to the mix of canto-techno and NRG beats and a karaoke bar off to the side lets patrons sing their hearts out.
