Daily 3pm-late
100m north of the City Hotel, Chaoyang
6417 7330

It may look like Vogue is back, but the 88 on the freshly painted building is the only that remains from the original. It’s now a club dedicated to football - you can tell by the name taken from a Chinese soccer fans’ website. Tons of TVs dot the interior and private rooms come equipped with two TVs and an internet-ready computer so that fans won’t miss a minute of the action. Meanwhile, the upstairs DJ booth pumps the kind of techno that made Vogue (in)famous.

White Cube

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Daily noon-2am
38 Mao Er Hutong, Dongcheng
6401 1675

Exactly what its name suggests: a white cube that makes a notable contrast to its surrounding neighbourhood and the public exercise facilities out front. Large square divans surround low-set tables in the front section, while a small private room lies off to the side and an elevated loft is tucked in the back. Manager Li Zhenhua (of Mustard Seed Garden fame) intends to use the venue for various exhibitions and events. Aside from its selection of decently priced drinks, authentic Yunnan food is offered, though it’s a bit of a challenge to dine on the tables. Reserve ahead for lunch.

With a high located DJ booth the club has an open feel while still maintaining two separate and distinct areas. In addition, there are three bars and an immaculately clean and a creatively designed space. Second floor is for private parties and has a good atmosphere for chatting.

Tiandi Juchang. The China Acrobatics Troupe puts on a nightly repertoire of breathtaking, usually flawless stunts.

Treelounge

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Daily 6pm-3am
East Third Ring Road, Chaoyang

One of Beijing’s true lounges features soft colours, couches with a modern twist on 1950s American diner booths, a fireplace for the cold weather and a patio for the warm weather. Music perfect to hang by includes dub, reggae, electronic, occasional performances by groove collective XXX, and more and psychedelic projections provide a bit of extra eye candy. Veggie food, BBQ and reasonably priced alcohol are available.

Trax

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

8pm-6am
4 Gongti Dong Lu, Chaoyang
6595 9494

Trax’s industrial-Scando hip interior is the suave yin to its neighbour’s kitschy yang. Trax’s management has keenly honed in on Beijing’s growing hip hop scene by hiring some local DJs who allow impromptu freestyle sessions behind their decks in between bouts of techno-cheese. RMB 20 for beer and RMB 15-35 for the hard stuff. Fly girls never have to pay cover, but b-boys better be prepared to drop da’ chedda: RMB 50 before midnight, RMB 20 afterwards.

The Starting Point

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Wudaokou, Haidian
8233 2264

This tough-to-find venue has put Wudaokou back on the live map. The spacious interior gets going nightly after 9. Most nights see a local DJ playing all kinds of music, but lately the venue has been hosting regular live shows. Beers start at 5 RMB. Liquor is 30 RMB a shot.

The Elephant

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

10am-2am
17 Ri Tan North Road, Chaoyang

The Elephant is located in the heart of Beijing’s Russian quarter, and provides good Russian food and lots and lots of vodka. There is a rooftop beer garden which is excellent in the summer. Come and practice your russian with the expats!
