The space formerly occupied by Sushi-Ya has been converted into a hip lounge, with soft lighting and Miami Vice decor. Booze prices have gone up, but remain relatively cheap: RMB 10 for Tsingtaos and a little more for a host of cocktails.

Hope Day

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Daily 5pm-2am
Sanlitun Nanjie, Chaoyang
6500 2817

Another bar defying the rumours of Sanlitun South’s imminent destruction is Hope Day, a two-floored lounge-like addition to the strip across from Durty Nellie’s. Tsingdaos are RMB 10, mixed drinks are RMB 20, and other beers range from RMB 20-25. Cigars are also for sale, and manager An Ying may add a food menu and specialty drinks soon. Upstairs, a spacious and swanky lounge environment awaits with balcony seating offering a bird’s eye view of the madness of the street below.

Jazz Ya

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

18 Sanlitun Bei Jiuba Jie
6415 1227

For eight years running, Jazz-Ya has done brisk business in its prime Sanlitun location. The comfortable bar and restaurant maintains the look and feel of a Japanese diner, complete with the clientele and Japanese pop music (interspersed by some great jazz). The main room has a bar and large wooden tables, while off to the side is a smaller restaurant area where they serve everything from Tokyo noodles to spaghetti carbonara. On the other side of the main building is Ushi-Ya, which offers grilled gourmet meats like genuine Kobe steak and shabu-shabu.

Minder’s Cafe

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

11am-2am, Fri, Sat 11am-4am.
Sanlitun South Bar Street
6500-6066

All acoustic roots music by the performing artist Nogabe nightly at 9pm, This south Sanlitun staple lies just off Gongti Beilu and is usually surrounded by a bevy of boozed-up punters. The décor is a mish mash of Americana kitsch and tack topped off by a well-stocked bar. The music varies between the standard Filipino cover band fare and pop disco. Frequented by a diverse crowd, Minder’s has retained a decidedly unpretentious feel despite its shifting scene over the years.
